Ulcers and You Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Ulcers and You - Research Paper Example Proteins comprise of amine and the acid groups in their structures. If a protein-rich food for instance, fish overstays under unfavorable conditions of temperature and pressure, the amino acid structures in it may alter and become toxic. The non-fresh foods jeopardize the gastric system and might worsen with time. Dr Heddy’s family situation might have incorporated the consumption of toxins on the non-fresh fish. Dr Heddy should know the causes and remedies of ulcers before taking the kids to the hospital. Ulcers closely relate to the colitis, an infection characterized by swellings in the large intestine wall. Ulcers and colitis possess a critical relationship since they are both result from the gastrointestinal wall infections. This exercise will employ the logic to describe the scientific reasoning behind the stomach infections. The ethos will strive to impart an absolute understanding of the topic amongst the audience. The emotional involvement will attain a consideration since the matter affects an individual’s family. Causes of Ulcers Ulcers are caused by bacterial infections that compromise the structure of the internal lining of   digestive tract. The bacteria can reach the stomach when the food consumed by an individual contains the bacteria or its eggs. The digestive tract comprises of the esophagus, the duodenum and the stomach. The esophagus is the path followed by the food taken into the stomach. The duodenum refers to the region between the esophagus and the stomach. The bacterium responsible for the ulcer development in an individual is called helicobacter pylori. The bacterium has the capacity to habit the stomach lining and administers its effects on the stomach walls. The bacteria infect the stomach walls and multiply to increase its chances of survival. The condition can also result from the intake of drugs, which are nonstreidal, and averts inflammations such as asprin and nuprin. The drugs disable the functionality of the go blet cells to secrete the mucus on the duodenal and the stomach linings. Once there are inadequate amounts of mucus in the tract walls, the hydrochloric acid and the digestive juices corrode the stomach walls. The corrosion then results into inflammations and wounds. Consumption of hot and spicy foods may also increase the amounts of the acids in the stomach enhancing the intensity of the hydrochloric acid actions on the gastric mucosa. There are other causes of ulcers such as smoking, alcohol and caffeine, which there will be no emphasis on in this scenario. The significance of focusing on the other causes is because Dr Heddy’s family developed the stomach problems after the consumption of food they expected of being stale. Symptoms of Ulcers The condition victims experience severe abdominal pains around the navel and the breastbone. The victims may also vomit foods they eat and intensive nausea. Among children, a significant weakness may be experienced because of anemia. Th e pains encountered emanate from the inflammations and the sores in the stomach. Diagnosis of Ulcer Endoscopy This invasive test entails insertion of a long-narrow tube through the mouth to the esophagus. The tube runs through duodenum and into the stomach. The tube is fitted with a sharp light and a camera. The tube examines the walls and detects the presence of the helicobacter pylor

The video My America Essay Example for Free

The video My America Essay The video My America, Honk If You Love Buddha, is simple story that highlights cultural differences and how people react towards these differences. The story talks about a woman who can vividly remember that she can go to several places in America without even meeting a fellow of Asian origin. This idea alone suggests that there is an evolution between the Asian and the American culture, and this evolution and changes could be a simultaneous or not. It could be that American opened its doors to this immigrant as a result of mutual ties between Asian countries, and then the immigration follows. Or there is a voluntary left off of cultural distinctiveness and then these Asians succumb to the foreign culture, which is the American culture in particular. It is not difficult to see what the filmmaker is trying to convey in this video, there are a few social issues that are being highlighted in the movie. First is the stereotyping of Asians. It was known for a fact that the Chinese constitute one of the largest numbers of immigrants in the United States, and they are visible in suburbs, engaged in the business of trade. They have become dominant in the past years and in fact they were able to establish what is presently; called China Towns, a reflection of what is life in China itself. China being one of the oldest existing civilization, being free from so much foreign influences will always be loyal and true to their culture despite being located in a foreign land. This loyalty to Chinese culture that remained so distinct to them in their everyday living and especially in their relationship to their American counterparts, subtly gave a lasting impression to Americans. These impressions could be as a result because they found the culture complicated and too broad for them to understand. The problems start, therefore when a person from the other culture lack understanding for those from the opposite culture. These individuals will develop preferences and hence, will gather biases and ignorant judgments towards the others. Furthermore, this biasness stereotyped to every one of the Chinese origins and more broadly to anyone of Asian decent. Second, is the culture of dominance and discrimination. If culture is a set of values that gives forth mutual trust and solidarity among a group of individuals, then, we can inconsiderately assume that anyone from the coming from a different culture is entirely foreign and not superior. Both the American cultures and Asian cultures have shown for a period of time intolerance to these differences. And this failure to accept could be the very reason why the race for dominance occurs, followed by the discrimination to those who are inferior whioch in this case are the Asian immigrants. It can be well observed in the story that there is indeed discrimination based on differences in ethnicity and on skin color. There is an unequal distribution of services and opportunities to between the whites and the Blacks and the Asians, as a third option. One can never take out preferences especially when it comes to cultural differences. We will always tend to remain loyal and inclined to the culture form which we come from. Personally, this is one thing that I keep in me, but this does not necessarily translate that I am superior. Cultural boundaries and differences exists because of values and values do not mean dominance over others, but just plain environmental effect, therefore, tolerance but be kept in mind as well. Although, one must never forgot to preserve his or her own identity. Culture is identity and influences are welcomes for the betterment but on must see to it that your identity still exists. I think this is the real problem; everyone comes to a specific bandwagon, melting both difference and similarities together, creating a new kind. Although it creates solidarity, it erases traces of their distinct culture; this is what is conveyed by the movie. Culture has a wide range of description; it could mean a lot of things for a different people in influence of the culture itself. According to Hofstede (1986), culture is a collective programming of a member of a group that separates it from the other member of another group, this shared ideas include the system of values. It must be remembered that a value system is the components and the foundation of a culture. Hofstede added that there are three broad perspectives of culture; the largest level is the universal level which is characterized by the common and the genetic programs of an individual. The middle part is the collective aspect of culture differentiated by its shared and the learnt thoughts of an individual. And lastly, the narrowest part of culture is the individual which is supposed to be unique, partly because of genetic influence and partly because of learnt behaviors gathered from the environment (Hofstede, 1986). In sociological perspective, a community, just like culture gained different approach and standpoint. One of those approaches is to give attention to the values of the group, these values could be the reason why the come together in and commit to the community and develop trust in the process. Moreover, community can also be divided based on spatial differences, but sociologists would like to think that these differences are enforced primarily by the values these groups have. The Catcher And The Rye :: essays research papers

Love, Affection, and Adulthood   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In J.D. Salinger’s controversial 1951 novel The Catcher in the Rye, the main character is Holden Caulfield. When the story begins Holden at age sixteen, due to his poor grades is kicked out of Pencey Prep, a boys’ school in Pennsylvania. This being the third school he has been expelled from, he is in no hurry to face his parents. Holden travels to New York for several days to cope with his disappointments. As James Lundquist explains, â€Å"Holden is so full of despair and loneliness that he is literally nauseated most of the time.† In this novel, Holden, a lonely and confused teenager, attempts to find love and direction in his life. Holden’s story is realistic because many adolescent’s face similar challenges.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  J.D. Salinger presents Holden Caulfield as a confused and distressed adolescent. Holden is a normal teenager who needs to find a sense of belonging. All though Holden’s obsession with â€Å"phonies† overpowers him. Dan Wakefield comments, â€Å"The things that Holden finds so deeply repulsive are things he calls â€Å"phony†- and the â€Å"phoniness† in every instance is the absence of love, and , often the substitution of pretense for love.† Holden was expelled from Pencey Prep School not because he is stupid, but because he just is not interested. His attitude toward Pencey is everyone there is a phony. Pencey makes Holden feel lonely and isolated because he had very few friends. Holden’s feeling of alienation is seen when he doesn’t attend the biggest football game of the year. His comments on the game: â€Å"It was the last game of the year and you were supposed to commit suicide or something if old Pencey didn ’t win† (2, Ch. 1). This also hints to Holden’s obsession with death. Holden can’t find a since of belonging in the school because of all the so-called phonies. Holden speaks of Pencey’s headmaster as being a phony. Holden says that on visitation day the headmaster will pay no attention to the corny-looking parents. Holden portrays his not being interested by saying, â€Å"all you do is study so that you can learn enough to be smart enough to buy a goddam Cadillac someday, and you have to keep making believe you give a damn if the football team loses†(131, Ch. 17). Holden does not care for school or money. He just wants everyone to be sincere and honest. Holden's obsession with phonies causes him to have no positive adult role models to follow.

George Catlett Marshall Essay -- essays research papers

George Catlett Marshall George Catlett Marshall served as a representative of the public service from 1939 to 1951, proposed the Marshall Plan, and was awarded the Nobel Prize. From 1924 to 1927, Marshall served in China and then successively as instructor in the Army War College in 1927, as assistant commandant of the Infantry School from 1927 to 1936. In 1936, Marshall was appointed commander of the Fifth Infantry Brigade. I July of 1938, Marshall accepted a position with General Staff in Washington, D. C (The Nobel Foundation 1). In September of 1939, President Roosevelt named George Catlett Marshall as Chief of Staff, which he took command of the army and its air forces on the day war began in Europe (Perkins 210). He became General of the Army in 1944. George Catlett Marshall built and directed the largest army in history. He became responsible for the building, supplying and recruiting over eight and a half million soldiers (The Nobel Foundation 1). Winston Churchill pronounced him â€Å"the true organizer of victory† for his work as trainer, planner, and strategist. Shortly after the war ended, Marshall decided to resign. He resigned in Novemb er of 1945 (Foner and Garraty 702). After his career in military ended, he pursued a diplomatic career. Marshall was sent to China to make peace between the Nationalists and the Communists, but the mission failed. On January 21, 1947, Marshall was named secretary of state (Luce 24). In 1950, after the outbreak of the Korean War, President Truman asked Marshall to return to the government as the head of the Department of defense. Page 2 In that year, Marshall increased the size of the army, promoted a plan for the universal military training, and helped to develop the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Foner and Garraty 703). As Marshall’s position as chief of staff, he urged military readiness prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. From 1941 he was a member of the policy committee that supervised the atomic studies engaged in by American and British scientists (The Nobel Foundation 1). President Harry Truman had many big decisions to make. Those decisions would greatly affect Americans and people around the world. In one of the most important of Truman’s decisions, he persuaded the American people to act generously to the defeated nations. What he had in mind had never been done before in the history of t... ...han brilliant, but his record of achievement stands almost unequaled. Primarily a military man, he served with immense distinction in other fields, and he had much to do with bringing out many of the distinguished soldiers of the war period,† says Dexter Perkins (Perkins 211). He was not only loved and respected by our nation and world, but also by his family and friends. Before Marshall’s death in Washington, D.C., on October 16, 1959, Winston Page 5 Churchill paid him the following tribute: â€Å"During my long and close association with successive American administrations, there are few men whose qualities of mind and character have impressed me so deeply as those of General Marshal. He is a great American, but he is far more than that. In war he was as wise as understanding in counsel as he was resolute in action. In peace he was the architect who planned the restoration of our battered European economy and, at the same time, labored tirelessly to establish a system of Western defense. He has always fought victoriously against defeatism, discouragement, and disillusion. Succeeding generations must not be allowed to forget his achievements and his example† (The Nobel Foundation 1)

How many jelly beans are in a jar

Setting up the paradigm. How do we know there is a God? If anything exists there is a God because you cannot create something from nothing. There had to be an initial force to set the universe into motion. Einstein refers to this force as â€Å"the cosmological constant†. This constant corrected Einstein theory of relativity to explain the movement of the universe. Originally Einstein believed that the universe was static even though his mathematical theories suggested otherwise. It was not until another mathematicianFriedman, solved Einsteinium's equation of general relativity using the cosmological constant. Einstein referred to this mistake as being the â€Å"biggest blunder† of his life. As a human how would I recognize God even if he came and revealed himself to me. For all I know the other worldly being could be Satan. (He is described in the bible as being a beautiful angel) If I could not even recognize God in his presence what hope do I have of finding any dire ction In life. How do we know what is important. Ask enough people. (Belief in a meaning of life)How do we know that we are good.If being good is so important how do we define â€Å"good†. (So we know what it Is that we are trying to do) Being good. How can you remove evil without being evil yourself. The importance of evil and good existing at the same time. (Creates the great struggle) The misconception of trying to â€Å"faith† our way Into heaven. (Why Baptists and Big Bang Atheists are essentially the same) Why should the meaning of life be so hard to find that we have to use faith to explain It. Association between wealth and power. Wealth allows you to have power over another mans will.Any time you arches something with money you are taking something that many people want and deciding that you deserve It for yourself. Wealth allows you to take a larger share for yourself. (Jesus and the rich man) God exists In the â€Å"permanent state of being† (a state of being outside of time where no change occurs), In this realm of existence evil has been abolished by God. So In order to enter this state we also must be free of the evil within ourselves. God Is a being outside of time and Is the perfect embodiment of good. For everything to be good In God's state of being that means evil has to be removed. It Is a requirement.

Proper Nouns in English Grammar

Proper Nouns in English Grammar In English grammar, a  proper noun is a  noun belonging to the class of words used as names for specific or  unique individuals, events, or places, and may include real or fictional characters and settings. Unlike common nouns, which make up the vast majority of nouns in English, most proper nouns like Fred, New York, Mars, and Coca-Cola begin with a  capital letter. They may also be referred to as proper names for their function of naming specific things. Proper nouns are not typically  preceded by articles or other determiners, but there are numerous exceptions such as The Bronx or The Fourth of July. Furthermore, most proper nouns are singular, but again there are exceptions as in The United States and The Joneses. How Common Nouns Become Proper Oftentimes common nouns like river combine with the name of a specific person, location, or thing to form a proper noun phrase, such as the Colorado River or the Grand Canyon. When writing such a proper noun, it is correct to capitalize both when mentioned together, but also correct to repeat the common noun alone later in reference to the original proper noun while leaving the common one lowercase. In the example of the Colorado River, for instance, it would later be correct to refer to it as simply the river, if the writer has not mentioned another river. The primary difference between proper and common nouns stems from the uniqueness of reference for proper nouns wherein common nouns do not specifically reference any one particular person, place, or thing but rather the collective understanding of all of the persons, places, or things associated with the word. In that way, common nouns can become proper if they are colloquially used to specify one unique person, place, or thing. Take for instance the Colorado River, which runs through the center of Austin, Texas, and locals have taken to just calling the River. This common noun becomes a proper one because, in the geographic region of Austin, its used to name one specific river. The Lighter Side of Proper Nouns Many great authors have used the idea of capitalizing common nouns and making them proper to characterize specific inanimate objects or take a concept like Great Places and make them into a physical place in a fictional world. In Dr. Seuss Oh! The Places Youll Go! author Theodor Geisel makes the common unique, forming proper nouns to characterize and create fictional worlds for his zany characters to inhabit. Be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray / or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O-Shea, he offers, youre off to Great Places! // Today is your day! J. R. R. Tolkien personifies a simple gold ring in his epic trilogy The Lord of the Rings, wherein he always capitalized the Ring, signifying it as a specific, proper noun because it is the One Ring to Rule Them All.   On the other hand, famed poet e. e. cummings (note the lack of capitalization) never capitalizes anything at all, including names and places and even the beginning of sentences, signaling the writers disregard for the concept of proper nouns entirely.

Top Major Causes and Motivations of Terrorism

Top Major Causes and Motivations of Terrorism Loosely defined, terrorism is the use of violence with the aim of furthering a political or ideological goal at the expense of the general population. Terrorism can take many forms and has many causes, often more than one. It can have its roots in religious, social, or political conflicts, often when one community is oppressed by another. Some terrorist events are singular acts linked to a particular historical moment, such as the assassination of Austrias Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914, which touched off World War I. Other terrorist attacks are part of an ongoing campaign that may last years or even generations, as was the case in Northern Ireland from 1968 to 1998.   Historical Roots Although acts of terror and violence have been committed for centuries, terrorisms modern roots can be traced to the French Revolutions Reign of Terror in 1794–95, with its gruesome public beheadings, violent street battles, and bloodthirsty rhetoric. It was the first time in modern history that mass violence was used in such a fashion, but it would not be the last. In the latter half of the 19th century, terrorism would emerge as the weapon of choice for nationalists, particularly in Europe as ethnic groups chafed under the rule of empires. The Irish National Brotherhood, which sought Irish independence from Britain, carried out a number of bomb attacks in England in the 1880s. About the same time in Russia, the socialist group  Narodnaya Volya began a campaign against the royalist government, ultimately assassinating Tsar Alexander II in 1881. In the 20th century, acts of terrorism became more prevalent throughout the world as political, religious, and social activists agitated for change. In the 1930s, Jews living in occupied Palestine conducted a campaign of violence against the British occupiers in a quest to create the state of Israel. In the 1970s, Palestinian  terrorists used then-novel methods such as hijacking airplanes to further their cause. Other groups, espousing new causes like animal rights and environmentalism, committed acts of violence in the 1980s and 90s. And in the 21st century, the rise of pan-nationalist groups like ISIS that use social media to connect its members have killed thousands in attacks in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Causes and Motivations Although people resort to terrorism for a number of reasons, experts attribute most acts of violence to three major factors: Political.  Terrorism was originally theorized in the context of insurgency and guerrilla warfare, a form of organized political violence by a non-state army or group.  Individuals, abortion clinic bombers, or groups, like the Vietcong in the 1960s, can be understood as choosing terrorism when they are trying to right what they perceive to be a social, political or historical wrong. During the Troubles in Northern Ireland, which stretched from 1968 to 1998, Catholic and Protestant groups waged an ongoing campaign of violence against one another in Northern Ireland and in England, seeking political dominance.Religious.  In the 1990s, a number of attacks carried out in the name of religion made headlines. The Japanese doomsday cult Aum Shinrikyo perpetrated two deadly sarin gas attacks in the Tokyo subways in 1994 and 1995, and in the Middle East, numerous suicide attacks since the 1980s have been celebrated as the work of Islamic martyrs.  Career terrorism experts began to arg ue that a new form of terrorism was on the  rise, with concepts  such as martyrdom and Armageddon  seen as particularly dangerous. However, as thoughtful studies and commentators have repeatedly pointed out, such groups selectively interpret and exploit religious concepts and texts to support terrorism. Religions themselves do not cause terrorism. Socioeconomic.  Socio-economic explanations of terrorism suggest that various forms of deprivation drive people to terrorism, or that they are more susceptible to recruitment by organizations using terrorist tactics.  Poverty, lack of education or lack of political freedom are a few examples.  There is suggestive evidence on both sides of the argument. Comparisons of different conclusions are often very confusing because they dont distinguish between individuals and societies, and they pay little attention to the nuances of how people perceive injustice or deprivation, regardless of their material circumstances. The group Shining Path carried out a years-long campaign of violence against Perus government in the 1980s and early 90s in an attempt to create a Marxist state.   This explanation of the causes of terrorism may be difficult to swallow. It sounds too simple or too theoretical. However, if you look at any group that is widely understood as a terrorist group, you will find these elements are basic to their story. Psychological and Sociological Considerations: Individual vs. the Group Sociological and social psychology views of terrorism make the case that groups, not individuals, are the best way to explain social phenomena such as terrorism. These ideas, which are still gaining traction, are congruent with the late-20th-century trend toward seeing society and organizations in terms of networks of individuals. This view also shares common ground with studies of authoritarianism and cult behavior that examines how individuals come to identify so strongly with a group that they lose individual agency.  There is also a substantial body of theory that now concludes that individual terrorists are no more or less likely than other individuals  to have abnormal pathology.   Analysis Rather than seek the causes of terrorism itself, a better approach is to determine the conditions that make terror possible or likely. Sometimes these conditions have to do with the people who become terrorists; they are described as having certain psychological traits, like narcissistic rage. And some conditions have to do with the circumstances they live in, such as political or social repression, or economic strife. Terrorism is a complex phenomenon; it is a specific kind of political violence committed by people who do not have a  legitimate army at their disposal. There is nothing inside any person or in their circumstances that send them directly to terrorism. Instead, certain conditions make violence against civilians seem like a reasonable and even necessary option. Stopping the cycle of violence is rarely simple or easy. Although the Good Friday Agreement of 1998 brought an end to the violence in Northern Ireland, for example, the peace remains a fragile one. And despite nation-building efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, terrorism remains a daily fact of life after more than a decade of Western intervention. Only time and commitment by a majority of the parties involved can resolve a conflict.
